Education in the arts and humanities prepares culturally literate and educated citizens capable of making informed decisions in the contemporary world.
Over the past century, the U of A has produced world-renowned researchers who have shaped intellectual movements in the liberal and creative arts.
Often crossing disciplinary boundaries, our researchers excel in areas as diverse as printmaking and design, literary studies and creative writing, philosophy, drama and film studies, ethnomusicology and choral performance, modern and ancient languages and linguistics, Canadian and East Asian studies, and humanities computing.
Major achievements range from producing the world’s first English-language, comprehensive encyclopedia of Ukraine to the discovery of the original layout of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in the UK.
The Orlando Project, a history of the lives and careers of over 1,000 British women writers, links humanities research with a technology-based business opportunity. This project has brought in nearly $3 million to support graduate students and humanities research at the University of Alberta.
