Health
The University of Alberta has a long and distinguished tradition of high-impact health sciences research.
Discoveries range from the major contributions of Dr James Collip to the discovery of insulin to the world-renowned and groundbreaking "Edmonton Protocol"—the standard care in clinical islet transplantation for treating diabetes.
Pioneering studies here in molecular virology led to the development of the anti-hepatitis B virus drug treatments and the world’s first mouse model for hepatitis C virus infections.
Today, interdisciplinary research teams in virology, immunology, structural and membrane biology, metabolomics, bioinformatics, and carbohydrate chemistry continue to make the basic discoveries that will lead to other innovative medical treatments.
U of A research teams also examine nutrition, health promotion and socio-behaviorial factors, and lifestyle and exercise to understand the complex issues contributing to health problems such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
