Northern Engagement

The U of A is the leading university in northern research and studies in Canada.

We have an outstanding record of research related to the North in fields such as cultures and languages, Arctic and subarctic environmental change, economic development, and circumpolar history and governance.

The Canadian Circumpolar Institute supports research by over 250 students and faculty across campus to address social and environmental concerns relevant to the North, from climate change and natural resource development to preserving cultural identity.

The University’s Northern Strategy builds on this foundation by identifying new opportunities for coordinated research and scholarship and by engaging with northern communities and governments in mutually beneficial research partnerships.
